Hornish Ready For The Lights

After a rough outing in April, Hornish is anxious to get back under the RIR lights

Sam Hornish Jr, driver of the No. 9 Richard Petty Motorsports Racing Ford in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, returned to RIR yesterday for the open testing session. Hornish was hoping to fine tune a car that struggled to a 39th place finish in the TOYOTA OWNERS 400 this past April.

“When we here for the Spring race, we wound up racing during the day and our car was awful," said Hornish.

Despite the tough finish, Hornish feels good about his ability to run Richmond, and is anxious to get back under the lights.

“I enjoy racing here at night. I think it's great for the fans. Bring on the cooler weather and the shade of the night and we'll get on out there and put on a good show," said Hornish. "Richmond is one of my favorite race tracks, had good success here on the Indy car side, the Cup side and in the XFINITY car."

Also at testing was NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, and Hornish had a few things to say about what the racing icon has meant to the sport.

“Wins and championships, being at the top of the game for over 20 years," said Hornish. "You look at the fan following that he has and it's a huge part of our sport. There's gonna be some big shoes to fill."

Hornish, Gordon and the rest of the gang will be a part of the action to get into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase for the Championship when the Sprint Cup Series returns on Saturday, September 12th for the “Last Race to Make the Chase”
