Fritz-A-Palooza Could Overshadow Washington Nationals’ Strasburg-Mania

While much of the sports world is anticipating tomorrow night’s debut of Washington Nationals phenom pitcher and last year’s #1 draft pick, Stephen Strasburg, fans in Richmond, Virginia are focused on the AA Eastern League appearance of Richmond International Raceway’s #1 pick, Doug Fritz. The track president will throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch tomorrow night before the Richmond Flying Squirrels vs. New Britain Rock Cats game at The Diamond. Fritz, who has been clocked at more than 35 mph, is scheduled to take the bump at 6:45 p.m.


Tuesday night is Tribute to Racing Night, featuring the first pitch from Fritz, a Richmond International Raceway display and the track’s Official Pace Car. Additionally, NASCAR’s Hermie Sadler will sign autographs at the display from 6:00-6:30. Sadler will also participate in a question-and-answer session on the field prior to the game. Richmond International Raceway will be giving away two pairs of tickets to the Saturday, September 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race—“One Last Race to Make The Chase.” Following the game, fans will be treated to a fireworks extravaganza.

Strasburg is one of the most highly touted prospects in the history of Major League Baseball. He was drafted #1 overall in the 2009 draft and will make his Major League debut tomorrow night in Washington, DC.


NASCAR returns to Richmond International Raceway September 10-11 for one of the most thrilling doubleheader weekends of the season. “One Last Race to Make The Chase” NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race will run “under the lights” on Saturday, September 11. The event is the final chance for drivers to race their way into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup—the series championship. Once the checkered flag drops, only the top 12 drivers in the point standings will make The Chase. Tickets start at $40 and can be purchased by clicking here or calling 866-455-RACE (7223).


The weekend begins on Friday, September 10, with a full day of on-track activity, highlighted by the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race “under the lights.” Friday’s ticket includes Fas Mart Pole Qualifying and practice for the Sprint Cup Series and WRIC-TV8 Pole Qualifying and practice for the Nationwide Series.
