Martin on pole for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400

NASCAR veteran Mark Martin (#5 Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Chevrolet) secured the Pole Position for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 during Friday’s Fas Mart Pole Qualifying at Richmond International Raceway with a speed of 126.808 mph.

Martin was very happy as he addressed the media, saying, “It feels so good to be driving the 5 team’s car. To be able to do stuff like this is beyond description. The car is good in race trim too. Tonight when I went out I had the confidence in the car and I felt it was worth the risk to go for it all. It’s cool to feel like you’ve gotten all of it and get it. I had a really good first lap and that gave me the confidence to really go for it on the second lap.”

Posting the second fastest speed was Martin Truex Jr. (126.731 mph) in the #1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Chevrolet. Truex Jr. commented, “It felt good today. We made a lot of changes during practice, a few more before qualifying and I want to thank the guys. I hope we can close the deal this time.”

Chesterfield, Virginia’s Denny Hamlin (#11 FedEx Express Toyota) will start third on Saturday night after turning a lap of 126.530 mph. Hamlin said, “I didn’t think we’d be that close to the pole. We have a lot left in our car. We’ve got a good spot to start from. I feel with the momentum we’ve got going, we’re going into the Chase in good shape.”

The big story of the weekend is the Race for The Chase. There are currently 11 drivers, occupying positions 5-15 in the standings, vying for the last 8 spots in The Chase. The starting positions of the 11 drivers are as follows:

# 99 Carl Edwards – 10th
