Coming out of the Goodyear Tire Test on March 29, Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske, was feeling optimistic about his chances at a Sunday afternoon day race in Richmond. “I think day races are fun,” he said, “I actually think they really rubber up the race track. When the track’s temp is up, the sun is beating on it… it takes the rubber and holds it more. So, it usually puts on a better race. It’s a lot of fun."
"When the track rubbers up, it kind of gets to the point where it over-rubbers on the bottom, which forces cars to move up into the second and third lanes, and that’s what, as racers, we want to see,” Logano said. “We want to have cars that can move around and be able to pass people by going to a different lane.
No doubt the debut of the new low downforce package and tire compounds tested yesterday will make for an exciting on-track atmosphere come TOYOTA OWNERS 400 weekend, April 22-24. With two of the closest finishes in NASCAR history already this season, drivers hope the competition will remain fierce on America’s Premiere Short Track.
“That’s the whole point of this low downforce package. It’s one thing to be behind cars and be able to still control them; also, when cars aren’t handling well it forces you to move around the race track and it allows Goodyear to put together a softer tire.” Logano continued, “So all of that combined, is what allows us to have the better races that we’ve seen so far this season.
“As a driver we all want to see that, and that also puts on a great race for the fans.
